AMI Gives Her All in “Suite in A,” Fusing R&B and Classical Genres

Originally posted to wluw.org on 8/14/20.

Chicagoan Aminata Burton, known onstage as AMI, has been apart of almost every side of live and recorded music. She is credited with working with names like Raphael Saadiq, Lizzo, Jamila Woods, Smino, and SZA. Further, she’s toured, worked as a music director with arrangements, and written material with these and several other musicians throughout her career.

Her devotion and passion for live music has been the life force for her own projects. In 2016, the vocal powerhouse released an EP entitled The Revelation. This year marks AMI’s first full-length solo project. Inspired by her classical training in music, Suite in A is a three-movement sonata, respectively categorized into Desires, Memories, and Live.

Following the release of the first movement, AMI spoke to WLUW about how this project came to life, and what she learned about herself throughout the journey.

Listen to the full interview here, and look out for the full release of Suite in A this fall.
