The Riot Grrrl Movement: Disrupting Power Struggles through Feminist Punk in the 1990s

As my final history course at Loyola in the Fall semester of 2020, I finally took a formal gender history class. The closing assignment was a research paper on any gender-related topic throughout American history. I used this opportunity to explore the riotgrrrl phenomenon. The paper was truly a labor of love for me. I had always wanted to explore women in punk music through the lens of a history project. The paper uses a mix of primary and secondary sources, mainly focusing on the impact of Kathleen Hanna and the zine-making culture of the movement.

Although I would like to eventually revisit this topic, I am proud of this paper as a representation of my interests and love for transgressive women in the music industry.
